An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-700 departing for Oakland, CA made a precautionary return to Seattle, WA with an engine problem on 25 August 2024.
Alaska Airlines flight AS1240, operated by a Boeing 737-700, was departing Seattle Tacoma International Airport. After normal takeoff from RWY16L, the flight crew reported experiencing an issue with the left hand engine while still on climb below 10,000 feet.

As a result flight crew shut the engine down and elected to make a precautionary return to Seattle Tacoma. The aircraft subsequently landed without further incident, approximately 30 minutes after the flight’s initial departure.
According to the online source Aviation Herald, passengers on board the aircraft reported hearing a loud noise and feeling the aircraft jump.
A replacement aircraft was mustered by the airline to complete the scheduled rotation to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK).

Flight data shows that the flight AS1240 made a departure out of Seattle Tacoma (SEA) at 1303 local time. Following the departure, flight crew terminated the climb at 7000 feet before negotiating a return to the origin airport.
A formal emergency was not declared, and the flight continued the return approach and landing under normal operating procedures. The return landing was logged at 1336 local time.
The aircraft conducting the AS1240 service for San Francisco Bay Oakland was a Boeing 737-700 registered N613AS. This is a 24.8-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Alaska Airlines. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery in November 1999.
