LONDON – Los Angeles International Airport has received more than 500,000 gallons of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from provider Neste.
This is the first large-volume delivery of SAF to Los Angeles, which will enable commercial airlines flying from the airport to reduce greenhouse emissions.
Such a delivery has been coordinated through LAXFUEL, which is a consortium of airlines that operate at the airport. It is the first time SAF is delivered into the LAXFUEL infrastructure using barges.
Executive Comments…
John Trozzo, the Chairman of LAXFUEL Corporation had this to say on the delivery:
“Sustainable aviation fuel is the fastest, most effective means we have to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from air travel.”
“We now have the means to supply this low-emission fuel in larger volumes, not only to the airlines flying from LAX but also to other airports in the region serviced by the broader fuel infrastructure managed by LAXFUEL in California.”
“This partnership with Neste proves that we have the capability to immediately implement this fuel as a low-carbon solution. It also provides a sound basis for scaling up future deliveries to airlines,”
Also commenting on this milestone was Chris Cooper, the President of Neste US:
“Neste is fully committed to supporting the decarbonization of aviation.”
“Our company has been at the forefront of accelerating the availability of SAF, and this achievement, together with LAXFUEL, shows how we are taking concrete steps towards a more sustainable future for aviation.”
“Recognized as one of the most visited states in the US, California has a huge demand for air travel.”
“By offering SAF to the state’s busiest airport, we are enabling passengers who travel to and from California to lower their carbon footprint while enjoying the benefits of flying,”
Neste’s SAF…
SAF delivers the performance of conventional jet fuel but with a significantly smaller carbon footprint on a life cycle basis.
Using Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over the fuel’s life cycle compared to using fossil jet fuel.
Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel is produced from 100% sustainably sourced renewable waste and residue raw materials, including used cooking oil and animal fat waste.
SAF is blended with conventional jet fuel and works seamlessly with existing fueling infrastructure and aircraft engines. Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel is commercially available and in use worldwide.
Overall…
This is a major delivery of SAF to Los Angeles by Neste, and this is going to set the benchmark for future deliveries as we proceed onwards into the future.
SAF is going to be one of many major components in the fight against reducing carbon emissions and getting to net zero by 2050, as per the industry’s standard.
Looking ahead, all eyes will be on Neste to see what other strides they can make in the SAF market, as well as to see how many more gallons of SAF they can deliver and receive orders for in the next 10 years.
But for now, we wait for the further development of SAF and what other options it can bring to the aviation-based table.
