LONDON – US ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines, has announced its plans to expand its services in Puerto Rico, adding 5 new routes to the U.S. territory.

New routes

The airline will be flying to Ponce for the first time, while they will be adding services to San Juan and Aguadilla. With this expansion, Frontier will be the airline with the biggest market share in the territory.

The newly added routes will bring the total number of routes to Puerto Rico to 19. This is part of a new program that coincides with a growth push designed to meet the increased demand among leisure travellers and visiting friends and relatives (VFR) traveling to and from the island.

The new routes will start in May of this year to Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, (SJU) from Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW), Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE), Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), and Cancun International Airport (CUN).

Additionally, Frontier will also begin daily one-stop service in May to SJU from Denver International Airport (DEN) via DFW.

Frontier will also launch nonstop service to Rafael Hernández International Airport in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico (BQN) from Tampa International Airport (TPA) and to Mercedita International Airport in Ponce, Puerto Rico (PSE) from Orlando International Airport (MCO).

“Puerto Rico is a hugely popular destination for leisure travelers as well as the large population of Puerto Ricans residing in the U.S. who enjoy returning to the island to visit friends and family,” said Daniel Shurz, senior vice president, commercial, Frontier Airlines.

“It is a fantastic vacation destination with stunning beaches, historical sites and the one-of-a-kind El Yunque National Forest. For those with family and friends on the island, we’re offering more options than ever to fly affordably and conveniently between a multitude of major cities and Puerto Rico.”

“We thank our Frontier partners for once again demonstrating their commitment to our destination,” said Carlos Mercado, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

“The addition of new nonstop routes between Puerto Rico and seven cities in the United States and Cancun, Mexico, significantly expands the options for visitors to the Island.”

“At the same time, we celebrate the expansion of operations to the Mercedita International Airport in Ponce, which will certainly boost tourism activity and the economy of the southern region.”

“Discover Puerto Rico is thrilled to invite Frontier and their passengers to ‘Feel the Warmth’ in Puerto Rico,” said Brad Dean, CEO Discover Puerto Rico.

“As we come off of back-to-back record-breaking years for tourism to the Island, we look forward to continuing our momentum and welcoming even more visitors to ‘Live Boricua.’”
