In today’s digital landscape, misinformation can spread rapidly, causing significant damage. Recently, airBaltic, Latvia’s national airline, has become the target of such unfounded claims.

A recent publication by Verstka, subsequently republished by Latvian media, alleged that airBaltic circumvented EU fuel import sanctions.

This narrative is not only misleading but also detrimental to the airline’s reputation and potentially, Latvia’s national interests.

It has become increasingly crucial for the public and media to exercise critical thinking when consuming information. Scrutinizing sources and evaluating the evidence presented is paramount.

Speculation and hypothetical scenarios, devoid of concrete proof, should not be mistaken for factual reporting.

airBaltic has categorically denied any wrongdoing and reiterated its unwavering commitment to adhering to EU sanctions.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent implementation of EU sanctions, airBaltic has ceased all collaboration with Russian fuel suppliers. This includes any financial transactions with Russian companies.

Clarification of Misleading Reports

The Latvian carrier moved to clarify specific points raised in the misleading reports:

No Collaboration Post-Sanctions: airBaltic has not engaged with Russian fuel suppliers. It has not made payments to Russian entities since the imposition of sanctions.

Past Transactions with АО ГАЗПРОМНЕФТЬ-АЭРО: The final payments to АО ГАЗПРОМНЕФТЬ-АЭРО occurred in March and April 2022. These were specifically for services rendered in Lisbon in March 2022. These payments were made before the EU sanctions came into effect.

Past Transactions with ООО ТАТНЕФТЬАВИАСЕРВИС: The last payment to ООО ТАТНЕФТЬАВИАСЕРВИС was an advance payment for refueling in Kazan. This was made in November 2021, well before the onset of the conflict.

Strict Adherence to EU Regulations: The EU sanctions on aviation fuel imports took effect in June 2022. airBaltic has consistently and rigorously complied with these regulations.

The database cited in the publications does not provide a complete or verifiable record of the company’s transactions. airBaltic distances itself from any claims based on this incomplete information.

The airline has urged media outlets to uphold the highest standards of professional journalism by publishing objective, fact-based reports.

The dissemination of unsubstantiated disinformation not only damages airBaltic’s reputation but also poses potential risks to Latvia’s national security and economic interests.

In response, airBaltic is compiling documentation to present to the relevant authorities, enabling a thorough assessment of the impact of these misleading claims.

airBaltic stated that remains committed to operating with integrity and in full compliance with all international and EU regulations. The airline says its priority is to provide safe and efficient air travel while upholding the highest standards of ethical conduct.

In conclusion, it is essential to distinguish between speculation and fact. The airline calls for responsible journalism and critical thinking to combat the spread of misinformation.
