This groundbreaking route leverages Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s (KLIA) recent recognition as a global aviation hub.
The strategic expansion aspires to create meaningful connections between two distinct regions. By offering affordable travel options, AAX aims to stimulate cultural exchange, boost tourism. The move has been lauded for facilitating business opportunities between Southeast Asia and East Africa.

Ekitela Moru, captured the significance of this new air route. “This direct connection represents more than just a flight path,” he explained. “It’s a bridge between cultures, offering unprecedented opportunities for tourism, trade, and people-to-people interactions.”
Highlighting Kenya’s unique attractions, Moru emphasized Nairobi’s distinctive character as the world’s only capital with a national park, promising travelers extraordinary experiences.
60th Anniversary of Kenya-Malaysia Diplomatic Ties
The timing of this route is particularly poignant, coinciding with the approaching 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Kenya and Malaysia in 2025. This milestone underscores the longstanding collaboration between the two nations across multiple sectors, including trade, investment, education, and cultural exchanges.
AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail shared the airline’s strategic vision behind this expansion. “Venturing into Africa has been a long-cherished dream,” he revealed.
The impressive 90% load factor on inaugural flights validates the company’s approach of providing affordable, accessible global connectivity. This move is part of a broader strategy that includes the upcoming acquisition of Capital A’s airline businesses, signaling ambitious future growth.
