AirAsia Cambodia Launches First International Flight to Kuala Lumpur

AirAsia Cambodia Launches First International Flight to Kuala Lumpur

Just three months after beginning operations, AirAsia Cambodia has flown its inaugural service between Phnom Penh and Kuala Lumpur.

AirAsia Cambodia (KT) has achieved a significant milestone this week, launching its first international flight from Phnom Penh to Kuala Lumpur.

This inaugural flight comes just three months after the low-cost carrier began operations in Cambodia. It marks a rapid expansion of its services and a new chapter in the country’s aviation history.

The inaugural flight, KT168, departed Phnom Penh International Airport at 12:25 PM local time. It carried a near-full load of passengers.

Before takeoff, travelers were treated to a vibrant cultural performance, setting the tone for a memorable journey.

The arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s Terminal 2 was made at 3:15 PM local time. The aircraft was welcomed with a traditional water cannon salute, commemorating the start of this new route.

Timing and Regional Significance

The launch of this international route is particularly timely, coinciding with the 57th ASEAN Day celebrations.

This alignment highlights AirAsia Cambodia’s commitment to fostering regional connectivity. It further supports the ASEAN community’s goals of economic integration and cultural exchange.

Operating seven times weekly, the new Phnom Penh-Kuala Lumpur route complements AirAsia Malaysia’s existing twice-daily flights between the two cities.

This increased frequency not only offers more travel options for passengers but also strengthens the economic and tourism ties between Cambodia and Malaysia.

Growth and Future Plans

Vissoth Nam, CEO of AirAsia Cambodia, expressed enthusiasm about the airline’s rapid growth and future prospects.

“The 99% load factor on our inaugural international flight is extremely encouraging,” Nam stated. “Since beginning operations in May, we’ve already flown 25,861 guests on our domestic routes. This new international service is a natural progression in our expansion strategy.”

Nam also highlighted the airline’s role in supporting Cambodia’s burgeoning tourism sector. In the first half of 2024 alone, Cambodia welcomed over three million international tourists. This gives some sense of the country’s growing appeal as a travel destination.

The new route between Phnom Penh and Kuala Lumpur is expected to further boost these numbers. It will facilitate easier access for Malaysian tourists and open up Cambodia to AirAsia’s wider network.

AirAsia Cambodia’s Domestic Network

Since its launch, AirAsia Cambodia has quickly established itself as a player in the nation’s aviation landscape.

The airline currently operates domestic routes connecting the capital Phnom Penh with popular destinations Siem Reap and Sihanoukville.

These routes have proven crucial in enhancing internal connectivity and supporting domestic tourism.

As part of the larger AirAsia Group, the Cambodian arm benefits from an expansive network. This currently spans over 130 destinations across Asia and beyond. The group’s strategic hubs in Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok further enhance this connectivity.

Leveraging group synergies, AirAsia Cambodia is also exploring the potential of the Fly-Thru service. This innovative offering allows passengers to connect to other exciting destinations across Asia with minimal hassle. This effectively positions Cambodia as a regional travel hub.

The Way Ahead

Looking ahead, AirAsia Cambodia has ambitious plans for further expansion. The airline plans to introduce more international routes across the region this year. It presently has feasibility studies underway for destinations such as Cebu and Bali.

This expansion aligns with the Cambodian government’s strategy to establish more direct flights from major global tourist destinations to Cambodia, as envisioned by Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet.

CEO Nam emphasized the airline’s commitment to this vision. “We are dedicated to supporting Cambodia’s tourism and economic development goals.”

“Our expansion plans are carefully crafted to complement the government’s strategy and to position Cambodia as a key player in the regional aviation market.”

As AirAsia Cambodia continues to grow, it will play an increasingly important role in Cambodia’s aviation sector. With its low-cost model, extensive network, and commitment to quality service, AirAsia Cambodia has a firm base to build upon.
