Air travel continues to evolve in 2024, with significant shifts in both domestic and international route rankings, according to new data from OAG, the premier global travel industry data platform. The recent report reveals interesting shifts and dynamics as it takes in the busiest air routes international and domestically.

The comprehensive analysis notably reveals interesting changes in travel patterns and airline competition across major routes.

U.S. Domestic Routes See Notable Changes

The Atlanta (ATL) to Orlando (MCO) route has emerged as America’s busiest domestic air corridor, accommodating 3.5 million passenger seats.

This route maintains similar capacity levels compared to both last year and pre-pandemic 2019, demonstrating consistent demand along this southeastern corridor.

In a surprising shift, the Honolulu (HNL) to Kahului (OGG) route, which dominated domestic rankings in 2023, now holds second place with 3.4 million seats.

Despite moving down one position, this Hawaiian inter-island route shows remarkable growth, operating at 17% higher capacity than its 2019 levels.

The Las Vegas (LAS) to Los Angeles (LAX) route secured third place by an extremely narrow margin. It trailed the second-place route by merely 14,941 seats – a difference of just 0.4%. This razor-thin margin highlights the intense competition among major U.S. air corridors.

A noteworthy development involves the New York La Guardia (LGA) to Chicago O’Hare (ORD) route, which has entered the top 10 rankings at seventh place. This route demonstrated the most substantial year-over-year growth, experiencing a 17% increase in capacity compared to 2023.

John Grant, OAG’s chief analyst, attributes this growth partially to Spirit Airlines‘ introduction of 700 new flights on the route, while American Airlines and United maintained their existing capacity.

This development reflects the dynamic nature of airline competition and changing market strategies with respect to busiest aviation routes.

International Routes and Global Competition

In the international arena for busiest aviation routes, the New York (JFK) to London Heathrow (LHR) route stands as the only U.S.-originating route among the top 10 busiest global international routes, securing the tenth position.

This prestigious trans-Atlantic corridor saw a 3% increase in capacity from the previous year, now offering 4 million seats annually.

The global landscape shows interesting shifts as well, with the Hong Kong (HKG) to Taipei (TPE) route reclaiming its position as the world’s busiest international route after ranking third in 2023.

Meanwhile, the Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Singapore Changi (SIN) route dropped from first to fourth place, indicating significant changes in Asian air travel patterns.

These rankings are based on scheduled airline seat volume for 2024, considering flights in both directions and using data from OAG Schedules Analyser.

The analysis includes comparative data from 2019 and 2023, providing valuable insights into the evolution of air travel patterns over recent years.

As air travel continues to break records, evidenced by TSA reporting its busiest day ever during the Thanksgiving holiday, airlines that leverage real-time aviation insights will be best positioned to adapt to market changes and meet evolving traveler expectations.
