Air New Zealand has recently welcomed its 30th ATR aircraft, an ATR 72-600, into its regional fleet.
This significant addition, entering service on 16 January 2025, will further strengthen the airline’s domestic network. It will see service particularly in connecting smaller communities throughout New Zealand.
The aircraft, registered as ZK-MZG, embarked on a journey from its manufacturing site in Toulouse, France.
After a week-long voyage spanning over 20,000 kilometers, it landed in Christchurch following stops in several countries, including Greece, Saudi Arabia, Oman, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, and finally New Zealand.

The Role of ATR Aircraft in ANZ Operations
Baden Smith, Air New Zealand’s General Manager of Strategy, Networks, and Fleet, emphasized the crucial role of the ATR aircraft in the airline’s operations.
“The ATR is an exceptional aircraft, perfectly suited for New Zealand’s unique geography and operating conditions,” Smith stated. “Its fuel efficiency, reliability, and ability to access smaller airports are key factors in ensuring we can effectively connect communities across the country.”
The arrival of the 30th ATR not only enhances the airline’s regional connectivity but also significantly improves the resilience of its network.
“This new aircraft will provide valuable support for our turboprop fleet, offering greater flexibility in maintenance and ensuring the continued reliability of our services for regional customers,” Smith explained.
PW127XT Powerplant
A notable feature of this new ATR is the incorporation of the Pratt & Whitney PW127XT engine. Designed for enhanced fuel efficiency, this engine is expected to deliver an estimated 3% fuel savings compared to its predecessor.
This marks a significant milestone for Air New Zealand, as it is the first ATR72-600 in their fleet equipped with this advanced engine technology.
Looking ahead, Air New Zealand has another ATR aircraft on order, scheduled for delivery in mid-2025. This further demonstrates the airline’s commitment to expanding its regional reach and providing reliable air travel options for communities across New Zealand.
