Air New Zealand is planning to introduce a state-of-the-art 787 Cabin Emergency Evacuation Trainer at its Auckland Training Centre.
This new training device offers a lifelike environment for the airline’s 1600 widebody cabin crew and 650 pilots to undergo comprehensive service and safety training, as well as annual assessments.
Air Safety Through Advanced Technology
Captain David Morgan, Air New Zealand’s Chief Operational Integrity and Safety Officer, emphasizes the trainer’s role in ensuring passenger safety. “This new device incorporates incredible technology, providing industry-leading training by simulating real-life scenarios,” he explains.
“With visual projections, audio cues, and even simulated smoke, we can recreate thousands of onboard situations.”
The immersive experience allows crew members to see, hear, and sometimes feel the simulated environment. This heightened realism better prepares them for potential real-world situations.
Features of the New Trainer
The facility boasts six aircraft doors, four of which can project 12 different scenes. These range from airport settings to forest floors and even ocean environments.
The trainer also includes 52 fully functioning seats across various cabin classes, including the new Business Premier Luxe.
Notably, the trainer replicates the layout of Air New Zealand’s upcoming 787 cabins, set to be introduced in the coming years. This forward-thinking approach ensures crew familiarity with future aircraft configurations.
Dual-Purpose Training Environment
Morgan highlights the device’s versatility: “It’s a hybrid safety and service trainer. Our cabin crew can practice the full inflight service in a controlled setting, from operating galleys to plating meals in Business Premier.”
To support premium service training, the facility features a fully equipped galley, complete with an oven, water boiler, and coffee machine. This allows crew members to refine their service skills in a realistic environment.
Airline Training Programs
Air New Zealand’s widebody cabin crew and pilots undergo multiple service and safety training sessions annually, along with yearly assessments.
The airline anticipates the commissioning for the new cabin product to take place in late 2024. In preparation, all 1600 cabin crew members will complete a one-day familiarization course.
For new recruits joining Air New Zealand’s widebody fleet, a rigorous five-week training program utilizing this new device awaits them.
Conclusion
The introduction of this advanced 787 Cabin Emergency Evacuation Trainer furthers Air New Zealand’s commitment to passenger safety and service excellence.
By providing a realistic and versatile training environment, the airline ensures its crew members are well-prepared for both routine operations and potential emergencies, setting a new standard in the aviation industry.
