Air New Zealand is preparing for a leadership transition as Chief Executive Officer, Greg Foran, has announced his resignation, set for October 20, 2025.
This news marks the end of a pivotal five-year tenure; one defined by navigating unprecedented challenges and fostering resilience.
Dame Therese Walsh, Chair of Air New Zealand, acknowledged Foran’s decision, emphasizing his belief that the airline is well-positioned for continued growth and innovation.
“Greg has indicated to the Board that he believes the airline is set up well to continue its trajectory of growth and innovation, and the time is right for him to take on a new challenge,” she stated.
Navigating Unprecedented Turbulence
Foran’s leadership has been particularly notable for steering the airline through the turbulent skies of the global pandemic and subsequent supply chain disruptions.
Dame Therese highlighted his “exceptional leadership and grit.” She crediting him with not only guiding Air New Zealand through “global aviation’s most significant crisis” but also preserving its core values.
One of Foran’s most significant accomplishments was managing the complex global supply chain issues that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic and persist today.
The ongoing engine issues affecting both Boeing and Airbus fleets have presented daily operational hurdles. However, Foran’s “relentless focus and global profile” were instrumental in minimizing disruptions for passengers.
“While these challenges impact our operations almost daily, Greg’s relentless focus, and global profile, have been instrumental in mitigating the consequential disruptions on our customers,” Dame Therese explained.

A Generous Transition Period
Recognizing the importance of a smooth handover, Foran has provided ample notice, remaining with Air New Zealand until mid-October 2025. This extended period will allow the Board to conduct a thorough global search for his successor and ensure a seamless transition.
“As I’d expect of Greg, he’s been very generous with his notice period. He will stay with Air New Zealand through to the middle of October,” Dame Therese confirmed.
During this time, Foran will continue to lead the airline. Dame Therese noted he would do so with the same dedication and energy that have characterized his tenure.

Reflecting on a Legacy with Pride and Gratitude
In his own words, Foran expressed immense pride and gratitude for his time at Air New Zealand. “Leading Air New Zealand has been one of the greatest privileges of my career,” he shared. “It’s been an incredible experience alongside an exceptional team.”
He emphasized the dedication of the airline’s 11,500 employees, acknowledging their “extraordinary commitment” to each other, customers, and the nation. Despite numerous external challenges, Air New Zealand has consistently strived to enhance its service.
“I am humbled by the work Air New Zealanders do every day and their extraordinary commitment to each other, our customers and our country,” Foran said.
“Despite so many issues outside of our control, we have continued to deliver improvements to our service every day. I’ll leave later this year knowing Air New Zealand’s foundations are immensely strong, and its future very bright.”
Looking Ahead
As Air New Zealand embarks on the search for a new CEO, the airline is poised to build upon the strong foundation laid by Greg Foran.
His legacy of resilience, innovation, and unwavering commitment to customer service will undoubtedly shape the airline’s future trajectory.
The board have announced they will begin a global search immediately. Greg Foran will leave behind a company that he believes is strong and ready for the future. Kia kaha.
