Air Kasai Antonov An-26 Overruns Kongolo Airport Runway, DR Congo

An Air Kasai Antonov An-26 has been substantially damaged in a runway excursion accident at Kongolo Airport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on 21 January.

An Air Kasai Antonov An-26 has been substantially damaged in a runway excursion accident at Kongolo Airport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The accident occurred on 21 January 2025 when the twin engine Antonov An-26 made a landing at Kongolo Airport (KOO) in the Tanganyika province.

The aircraft, registered 9S-AYN, was reportedly carrying a cargo of cigarettes on a regional flight from Goma Airport (GOM).

Landing Accident Kongolo Airport


After making a landing at Kongolo Airport, the aircraft was unable to stop within the remaining runway distance. It overran the runway end and entered a grassy clearway area. The undercarriage collapsed and the aircraft came to rest with its right engine on fire.

Authorities advised that there were no casualties as a result of the landing accident. Five crewmembers were onboard the aircraft at the time of the accident.

According to Radio Okapi, the Administrator of Kongolo territory, Jean-Paul Ngongo Mboka Miba made a statement after visiting the crash site.

“The captain speaks of a bad landing. The plane, while landing, deviated from the normal path of the runway. The propeller on the right side was blocked. The engine on the right side was damaged.”

“The goods were not affected and all the crew members are safe and sound. There were (no) deaths. We thank the inhabitants who mobilized to put out this fire.”
