Air India Express 737-800 Returns to Delhi With Engine Problem

An Air India Express Boeing 737-800 bound for Bahrain made a precautionary return to Delhi with an engine problem on 2 September 2024.

Air India Express flight IX145, a Boeing 737-800, had conducted a takeoff from RWY09 Indira Ghandi International Airport when the incident occurred.

During the initial climb procedure, the flight crew experienced problems with one engine and elected to make a precautionary return to the origin airport.

The flight subsequently landed without incident approximately 30 minutes after its initial departure. According to the online source Aviation Herald, the local resident who lived in the proximity of the overshoot end of the runway contacted police after discovering metal fragments.

Police who responded to the call recovered pieces of metal which fell on the residents property. It has yet to be turned determined whether the fragments were associated with the aircraft.

India’s aviation regulator DGCA will conduct an inspection of the aircraft and investigate the incident.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that flight IX145, bound for Bahrain International Airport (BAH), made a departure out of Delhi at 2048 local time. The operating crew then terminated the climb at 9000 feet before initiating a direct return to Delhi (DEL).

The aircraft conducting the IX145 service to Bahrain was a Boeing 737-800, registered VT-AXR. This is a 17.2-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Air India Express.

It has been an operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in July 2007.
