Air India and Virgin Australia have formalized a codeshare agreement designed to significantly improve travel facilitation between India and Australia.
This strategic partnership offers expanded route options and streamlined connectivity for passengers traveling between the two nations.
Codeshare Agreement Overview
The unilateral codeshare agreement enables Air India to affix its “AI” code to designated flights operated by Virgin Australia. This arrangement provides Air India customers originating in Delhi with enhanced access to both Melbourne and Sydney.
It also facilitates onward connections via Virgin Australia’s network to 16 destinations within Australia and New Zealand. A key benefit of this collaboration is the seamless baggage transfer for passengers traveling on a single ticket, ensuring a more convenient and efficient journey.

Destination Coverage
The codeshare agreement encompasses a comprehensive network of destinations, catering to diverse travel needs. The 16 cities served include: Adelaide, Ballina/Byron Bay, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Darwin, Gold Coast, Hamilton Island, Hobart, Launceston, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Queenstown (New Zealand), Sunshine Coast, and Sydney.
This extensive coverage provides travelers with a wide range of options for both business and leisure travel.
Airline Perspectives
Virgin Australia’s Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer, Alistair Hartley, emphasized the growing importance of the India-Australia tourism market. He expressed confidence that the partnership will stimulate further growth.

It also unlocks new travel opportunities for leisure travelers seeking to experience Australia’s diverse attractions. These range from the Gold Coast beaches to the natural wonders of the Great Barrier Reef.
