Air Canada pilots have approved a new four-year contract, bringing significant improvements to pay and working conditions. The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) represents more than 5,200 Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge pilots.
The deal, which was approved by 67% of the voting pilots, marks major improvements to pay and includes some improvements to working conditions.
Background to Agreement
Industrial action by the pilots’ collective was narrowly avoided last month. When discussions stalled, pilots threatened to walk off the job on a 72-hour strike. A tentative agreement was struck at the eleventh hour, just prior to the airline threatening a lockout notice.
The negotiations leading to this agreement were driven by several key factors. Firstly, the pilots’ previous contract had expired, necessitating a new agreement. Secondly, there was a growing recognition of the need to address long-standing issues related to compensation and work-life balance.
The aviation industry has faced significant challenges in recent years, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to widespread disruptions and financial pressures.
The agreement delivers major enhancements to compensation and addresses quality of life concerns. While specifics of the have not yet be made public, the contract is said to be the largest labor agreement in the airline’s history.
New Contract in Effect Immediately
A strong majority of eligible pilots participated in the vote, with 67% supporting the deal.
First Officer Charlene Hudy, chair of the Air Canada ALPA Master Executive Council (MEC) gave comment. “This contract is groundbreaking for Air Canada. It helps recover benefits our pilots lost over two decades and sets a solid foundation for the future. We’re eager to work under these improved terms while continuing to serve our passengers across Canada, North America, and globally.”
The contract takes effect immediately, including a ratification payment to compensate for the period since September 30, 2023, when the previous agreement expired. This new deal will run until September 29, 2027.
Hudy added, “Air Canada’s growth plans show their commitment to pilots through this investment, emphasizing our crucial role in the airline’s ongoing success.”
Air Canada Comments
In a separate statement, Air Canada also welcomed the vote outcome. Michael Rousseau, President and Chief Executive, commented, “We’re delighted our pilots have approved this agreement. It ensures they remain the best-paid in Canada while addressing their work-life balance concerns. The deal also provides our company with flexibility and a framework for future expansion.”
The agreement covers over 5,200 pilots at Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge. It maintains their position as the highest-paid in Canadian commercial aviation while allowing the company to pursue its growth strategy.
