In a recent initiative to promote diversity and inclusion in the aviation industry, Air Canada proudly participated in the Aviation Career Exploration (ACE) week, organized by Elevate Aviation in Edmonton, Alberta.
This event marked a significant step towards introducing women to various career opportunities within the aviation sector. It held a particular focus on the often-overlooked role of Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs).
The ACE program brought together 17 women from diverse backgrounds in the Edmonton area. This initiative offered them a unique glimpse into the world of aircraft maintenance.
ACE Program
Leading the charge were Berlyn Siscar and Carina Dung, two accomplished Air Canada AMEs based in Vancouver. Their involvement in the Women Employment skills training program provided participants with invaluable insights and first-hand experiences from successful women in the field.
Christine Merrick, Director of the Elevate Aviation Learning Centre, shared the program’s vision. “ACE is designed to introduce people to aviation careers through immersive, hands-on experiences.”
“While roles like pilots and flight attendants are well-known, we aim to spotlight careers such as Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and de-icing technicians, expanding awareness and education about these vital positions.”
The scope of ACE extends beyond adult participants. Elevate Aviation has crafted an inclusive approach by organizing field trips for students from grades 6 to 12.
This strategy aims to ignite a passion for aviation early on. This has the potential to shape future career choices and ultimately diversify the industry’s talent pool.
Air Canada Involvement
In 2023, Air Canada solidified its commitment to this cause by signing a comprehensive partnership agreement with Elevate Aviation.
This collaboration encompasses support for various initiatives,. These include the organization’s annual gala, the Cross Country Tour, and the cornerstone ACE program.
Merrick emphasized the critical nature of this partnership: “Air Canada’s support is indispensable to our mission.”
“Beyond the crucial financial backing, having industry professionals dedicate their time to engage with our students during ACE week is transformative. It’s this personal interaction that truly makes a difference in these women’s lives and career aspirations.”
Air Canada’s involvement in ACE furthers its broader mission to inspire the next generation of women in aviation. The airline is committed to promoting non-traditional jobs, breaking stereotypes, and supporting women in achieving their aviation goals.
Since 2019, Air Canada has sponsored the annual Captain Judy Cameron Scholarships, established in honor of its first female pilot, to nurture emerging talent in the field.
Expanding its support, Air Canada recently announced partnerships with seven colleges across Canada.
These agreements provide financial assistance to students who self-identify as women or visible minorities pursuing studies as AMEs, further breaking down barriers to entry in the field.
Diversity in Aviation
The airline’s commitment to diversity in aviation extends to major industry events. Air Canada was the main sponsor of this year’s Ninety-Nines International Conference and Career Expo in Vancouver.
The airline also sponsored the Canadian Women in Aviation (CWIA) conference in Montreal. It continues to be a strong advocate in promoting inclusivity within the industry.
Chantal Dugas, General Manager of DEI Community Relations and Partnerships at Air Canada, summed up the airline’s perspective: “Our partnership with Elevate Aviation stems from our shared goal of promoting the aviation industry to women.”
“It’s a natural collaboration that aligns perfectly with our values. Hearing about the participants’ experiences and witnessing their excitement reaffirms the importance of our efforts and fills us with pride.”
As the aviation industry continues to evolve, initiatives like ACE and partnerships between industry leaders and organizations like Elevate Aviation play a lead role in shaping a more diverse and inclusive future for the sector.
