Lask week, Aer Lingus launched a direct flight from Cork Airport to Bilbao, opening the door to the vibrant Basque Country and northern Spain.
The inaugural two-hour flight took off on 16 April, at 12:30 local time, marking the first scheduled connection between Cork and this stunning region. It offers easy access to iconic destinations like Bilbao, San Sebastián, La Rioja, the Navarra Pyrenees, and Pamplona.
Bilbao becomes the first new route opened up by the carrier from Cork this summer. A further connection to Bordeaux will be inaugurated next month.
Discovering Bilbao
The Basque Country spans over 20,000 square kilometers and boasts breathtaking scenery, charming coastlines, and world-class cuisine.
Bilbao, once an industrial hub, has reinvented itself as a cultural gem. The Guggenheim Museum, a masterpiece of modern architecture, stands as its crown jewel. It draws art lovers from across the globe.

Just an hour away lies San Sebastián, a coastal paradise famed for its golden beaches, such as La Concha, and its historic old town. Foodies will delight in the region’s pintxos—Basque-style tapas that elevate small bites to an art form.
For adventurers, Bilbao serves as a gateway to the Camino de Santiago, with popular routes like the Camino del Norte and Camino Frances winding through the region.
South of Bilbao, the La Rioja region beckons with its rolling vineyards and over 500 wineries, making it a haven for wine enthusiasts.
Meanwhile, Pamplona, known for its historic charm and the Running of the Bulls, is just a two-hour drive from Bilbao Airport. Whether you’re seeking culture, nature, or gastronomy, this region has it all.

Cork Airport Summer Scheduling
This new Bilbao route is one of two exciting additions to Cork Airport’s summer 2025 schedule. Direct flights to Bordeaux will also begin on May 15, expanding travel options for Munster residents.
These routes are set to boost inbound tourism as well. According to Tourism Ireland, France and Spain rank as the fourth and fifth largest markets for visitors to Ireland.
Travelers from these countries are eager to explore Ireland’s historic sites, scenic landscapes, and local food and drink.
At the launch of the Cork-Bilbao service, Tara Finn, Head of Aviation Business Development & Communications at Cork Airport, shared her enthusiasm.
“This is our first link to northern Spain and the Basque Country. Seeing a full flight today is thrilling. From Bilbao’s vibrant arts scene to San Sebastián’s stunning coast and La Rioja’s vineyards, there’s something for everyone.”

Susanne Carberry, Aer Lingus’ Chief Customer Officer, added further comment. “Our new Cork-Bilbao route gives Munster travelers more summer options while inviting Spanish visitors to discover Cork.”
“The Basque Country’s unique blend of experiences appeals to all ages. Today’s full flight shows the demand for this route, and we’re eager to welcome more passengers soon.”
With its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and culinary delights, northern Spain is now just a short flight away.
Whether you’re planning a cultural escape, a foodie adventure, or a scenic retreat, Aer Lingus’ new route makes it easier than ever to explore the Basque Country.
