Abu Dhabi Airports, managing five airports across the Emirate, announced impressive passenger traffic results for the first quarter (Q1) of 2024.
Over 6.9 million passengers traveled through their network, a significant 35.6% increase compared to the same period in 2023 (5.1 million).
This growth reflects a positive upswing in global passenger and commercial air travel demand.
Industry analysts attribute this rise to several factors, including increased travel confidence post-pandemic, growing disposable incomes, and the expansion of low-cost carrier options.
Zayed International Airport Leads the Charge
Zayed International Airport, the network’s main hub, played a starring role. It welcomed over 6.8 million passengers, a remarkable 36.0% rise year-on-year.
This surge is further bolstered by a 26.6% increase in flight movements. The newly launched terminal undoubtedly contributed to this success, offering passengers exceptional facilities and services.
Additionally, the return of Turkmenistan Airlines and the launch of Hainan Airlines’ Haikou, China route expanded the airport’s airline network to 29 scheduled carriers.
This strategic diversification allows passengers greater choice and connectivity to a wider range of destinations.
Top Destinations and Continued Growth
London retained its top spot as the most popular destination city, with nearly 290,000 passengers traveling to and from the English capital.
Mumbai, Kochi, Delhi, and Doha rounded out the top five. These figures solidify Zayed International Airport’s position as a preferred choice for regional and international travel, catering to both tourism and business needs.
The airport’s strategic location and focus on world-class amenities make it a convenient and attractive option for travelers across the globe.
Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at Abu Dhabi Airports, expressed her optimism following the Q1 disclosures.
“These figures showcase the ongoing success of our airports. We are attracting a growing number of airlines and passengers worldwide.”
“Abu Dhabi Airports remains dedicated to investing in facilities and services, enhancing the passenger experience and value proposition for existing and new airlines and customers. These strong Q1 results position us for further growth and success.”
Cargo Traffic Sees Significant Rise
Beyond passenger growth, cargo traffic also witnessed a significant rise in Q1 2024. A total of 162,000 tonnes of air freight were handled across all airports, representing a noteworthy 25.6% increase compared to the same period in 2023 (129,000 tonnes).
This impressive performance underscores the Emirate’s growing role in facilitating global trade, driven by increased shipments of general cargo and specialized products like pharmaceuticals, express deliveries, and temperature-controlled goods.
This diversification in cargo handling reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to becoming a key logistics hub in the region.
