Regional aircraft manufacturer ATR has expanded its collaboration with prominent turboprop lessor Abelo. In a major fleet update, Abelo has modified its original order of 10 ATR 42 STOL aircraft.

The global aircraft lessor has opted instead for an equal split of five ATR 42-600 and five ATR 72-600 planes. The company has also added three ATR 72-600 aircraft to its fleet through new firm orders, to meet fleet modernization and expansion demand.

ATR has recently made the decision to cease development of its STOL variant, the ATR 42-600S, in order to refocus efforts on its core product range.

Market Demand for Regional Turboprops

This strategic fleet adjustment, completed in late 2024, highlights strong market demand in the regional aviation sector for 50-seat turboprops.

This segment has traditionally been a stronghold for Abelo, which sees substantial replacement potential, particularly within its existing customer base. The decision reflects careful analysis of market trends and operator requirements across various regions.

The addition of three ATR 72-600 aircraft stems from option conversions agreed to at the 2023 Dubai Airshow, further strengthening the relationship between the two companies.

This development marks a significant milestone in their ongoing partnership and showcases the growing demand for versatile regional aircraft solutions.

The Success of ATR Aircraft Program

This ongoing collaboration demonstrates Abelo’s trust in ATR’s aircraft program and its dedication to helping regional operators meet growing travel demands while promoting environmentally responsible aviation practices.

The partnership aligns with both companies’ commitment to sustainable air travel and regional connectivity enhancement.

“Our mission at Abelo focuses on promoting sustainable regional air travel through low-emission turboprop solutions,” explained Stephen Gorman, Abelo’s Chief Executive Officer. “We’re expanding our fleet with both ATR 42-600 and 72-600 models, plus three additional ATR 72-600 aircraft.”

“We continue offering our customers superior efficiency, lower environmental impact, and improved comfort. This strategic investment enhances our capacity to serve the regional aviation market’s changing requirements and supports our commitment to environmental stewardship.”

Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, ATR’s Chief Executive Officer, commented for the manufacturer. “This fleet expansion, with delivery positions secured through 2029, reinforces the enduring partnership between ATR and Abelo.”

“It reflects our shared commitment to improving regional connectivity and delivering premium air transport solutions across diverse routes. These new ATR 42s and 72s will help Abelo effectively match market demand using the most cost-efficient regional aircraft while supporting the industry’s shift toward sustainable aviation.”

“The extended delivery schedule ensures a steady stream of modern aircraft entering service over the coming years.”

ATR plans to announce additional orders when presenting its complete 2024 results in the coming weeks, suggesting further growth in the regional aviation sector.
